The Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) has filed a complaint with the International Labor Organization (ILO) over the arrest of Kendhoo MP Mauroof Zakir and several fishermen during the Fishermen’s Day protest.  
In a statement issued Saturday, the party said it submitted the complaint regarding the detention of eight individuals, including Mauroof, who were accused of obstructing the peaceful protest organized by the Bodu Kanneli Masverinnge Union (BKMU).  
The complaint calls on the ILO to urge the government to safeguard workers’ rights, ensure the safety of those advocating for them, and initiate consultations with fishermen’s representatives.

The MDP reiterated its demand for the release of Mauroof and the other arrested protestors. It also accused the government of violating constitutional safeguards by detaining four individuals without producing them before a judge within 24 hours, as required.  
According to the party, police failed to present evidence at remand hearings, yet the court extended custody in violation of the Constitution and the Criminal Procedure Code.  
“This is a decision taken against the Constitution and due to the political influence of the government,” the MDP said.

Mauroof remains hospitalized at IGMH for injuries sustained during the protest and is scheduled to undergo surgery, MDP Parliamentary Group Deputy Leader Hussain Ziyadh confirmed.
