The practical work on the highly anticipated land reclamation project in Veymandoo, Thaa Atoll, is now officially underway.
The commencement was announced by President Dr Mohamed Muizzu via a social media post, marking a significant milestone in a key development pledge for the region.
The project, awarded to the Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC), was formally granted during the President's official visit to Thaa Atoll. The decision was announced at a community meeting held in Veymandoo in September of last year, where President Muizzu outlined the project's critical scope. He confirmed that 25 hectares of new land will be dredged and reclaimed for the island.
“This island is the capital of this Atoll. It is very important for the development of this island. I promised the people in the presidential election. Under the agreement signed tonight, 25 hectares of land will be added to this island,” the President had said, underscoring the project's importance.
The Veymandoo initiative is a flagship project of the administration, directly fulfilling a campaign promise made by President Muizzu. Upon completion, it is expected to comprehensively resolve the acute land shortage faced by the community. The newly created land will provide essential space for housing allocation and spur local economic growth by opening new areas for industrial activities.
In a complementary effort to bolster the island's infrastructure, the government has also awarded a concurrent project to modernise the Veymandoo harbour.
