Physical works have officially commenced on a strategic infrastructure initiative to modernise the road networks of Isdhoo and Kalaidhoo, two distinct administrative zones situated on a single contiguous island in Laamu Atoll. This extensive urbanisation effort, formally inaugurated in October 2025 during an official visit by President Dr Mohamed Muizzu, has been contracted to the Road Development Corporation (RDC) for execution.
The project mandates the application of asphalt across 4.39 kilometres of thoroughfares, elevating the local transport infrastructure to contemporary standards. Representing a capital investment exceeding USD 6.48 million, the development is designed to provide direct utility to a combined local population of more than 1,600 residents. Structural upgrades will primarily target the islands' major arteries and critical access routes serving public service institutions and administrative offices.
These technical enhancements extend beyond the surface; the contract includes the installation of sophisticated stormwater drainage systems. These integrated components are designed to mitigate seasonal flooding and ensure the long-term structural resilience of the island’s logistical framework, safeguarding the state's investment against environmental degradation.
The durability of this internal network serves as a precursor to a broader regional integration strategy, most notably the construction of a new 315-metre causeway linking Kalaidhoo with the neighbouring island of Dhan'bidhoo. Also launched during the visit by President Muizzu in October, the causeway project has been entrusted to the Maldives Transport and Contracting Company.
Once this transit link reaches completion, it will effectively unify the communities of Dhan'bidhoo, Kalaidhoo, and Isdhoo, physically connecting a broader demographic of over 3,500 people. Government officials noted that the newly established transit routes are expected to alleviate logistical bottlenecks for residents traversing the three islands, ultimately acting as a catalyst for measurable economic and social advancement throughout the region.
