Nasheed appointed as interim president of MDP

Reeko Moosa Manik, chairperson of the leading opposition party, Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP), has resigned.
Moosa Manik announced his resignation at the ongoing meeting of the party’s national council.
Moosa Manik’s resignation follows the party being defeated in three recent elections.
The meeting on changing the party’s leadership, attended by most members of its national council, is ongoing at Dharubaaruge.
MDP President Mohamed Nasheed urged new members to assume leadership posts in the party following its defeat in the Parliamentary Election held on 22 March.
MDP managed to secure only 26 seats in the 18th parliament.
