President reaffirms commitment to MSME empowerment and nationwide economic participation

In observance of Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSME) Day, His Excellency President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has reaffirmed the Government's commitment to empowering local entrepreneurs, artisans, and freelancers with the tools and opportunities to thrive.
In his message, President Dr Muizzu emphasised that the true strength of the Maldivian economy rests not within its largest enterprises, but in the breadth of participation. The President outlined Maldives 2.0, a national vision to build a diversified, digitally enabled economy that opens global markets to every local producer and ensures the financial system serves all. He added that the Government aims to grow the digital and creative sectors to 15 per cent of the nation's GDP, placing MSMEs at the centre of this transformation.
He also outlined infrastructure to distribute opportunity nationwide, including regional cultural centres in B. Thulhaadhoo, Dh. Rin'budhoo, and GDh. Gadhdhoo for heritage entrepreneurs, and a dedicated Creator Hub in Malé for creative professionals.
The President noted that engagements such as the landmark Addu Business Dialogue are already yielding results, with outcomes shaping the nation's first Trade Acceleration Zone across Addu City, Hulhudhoo, and Meedhoo, which will feature a concessions package set for implementation in 2027. Additionally, a strategic partnership with Alibaba has established a direct channel to international buyers for local producers registered under Authentic Maldives.
Addressing financial barriers, President Dr Muizzu detailed the expansion of Shariah-compliant financing avenues under the SME Digital initiative, which covers working capital, business assets, the creative economy, and women entrepreneurs. He emphasised that the financial landscape is being modernised through innovations such as the SWIPE digital wallet by Bank of Maldives (BML), giving MSMEs faster, simpler, and more flexible ways to manage transactions, cash flow, and daily operations. He also highlighted the fulfilment of a key pledge, noting that PayPal integration is now live in the Maldives, allowing local entrepreneurs to seamlessly tap into the global digital economy.
To sustain this momentum, the Government has designated 2026 and 2027 as years of special focus for SME advancement, ensuring the policy environment, financing, and digital infrastructure to turn strong ideas into sustainable businesses.
The President concluded by expressing confidence that the foundations are in place and the direction is clear, extending warm wishes to all MSMEs, entrepreneurs, creators, and freelancers on the occasion.
President Dr Muizzu reiterated these sentiments on his X account, emphasising that the strength of the Maldivian economy lies in the thousands of small businesses that drive growth and create opportunities across the islands, and that opportunities must be accessible to all in building a more resilient economy.
