Minister of Agriculture and Animal Welfare, Dr Mariyam Mariya, has declared that modern agriculture is not merely an option but a national priority, establishing the essential foundation needed to ensure the Maldives’ long-term food security.
Speaking at the closing ceremony of a modern agricultural training programme in Kaashidhoo, Kaafu Atoll, Minister Dr Mariya highlighted the severe vulnerabilities facing the island nation, including land scarcity, the adverse impacts of climate change, and the persistent challenge of meeting the needs of a growing population.
To effectively overcome these systemic issues, the Minister stressed the urgent need for quick introduction and utilisation of robust, sustainable modern technologies across the sector.
Minister Dr Mariya defined the recent training programme as a strategic initiative designed to equip farmers with innovative ideas and resources for sustainable development. She encouraged participants to play a leading role in shaping the future of agriculture.
The Minister specifically noted that practical experience in innovative technologies such as sandless farming and modern nutrient management holds the potential to revolutionise island communities. Additionally, she emphasised that practical knowledge of livestock management represents a vital step towards reducing dependence on foreign imports.
Minister Dr Mariya concluded by linking the skills acquired through these training programmes directly to the country’s national economic goals. These skills, she stated, will pave the way for the planned expansion of facility agriculture, strengthen the value chains for Maldives plants and poultry, and ultimately promote commercial agriculture nationwide, fulfilling objectives set under the far-sighted guidance of President Dr Mohamed Muizzu.
Modern Agriculture is Maldives’ Key to Long-Term Food Security, Says Minister Mariya
