Man arrested for theft says he trespassed to abuse drugs

A man who was arrested for theft has on Wednesday said he had trespassed into the house with the intention of abusing drugs.
A remand order of the Criminal Court read that the 34-year-old Maldivian man was arrested on the suspicion trespassing and theft. The court held that sufficient evidences had been produced to prove his culpability.
The court in its order said the man is suspected to have attempted to steal electric cables from the house but had claimed he entered the property to abuse drugs when he was apprehended by the residents.
Maldives Police Service said officers had not discovered any drugs from the man’s possession at the scene and had claimed during trials that he entered the house because he felt dizzy.
Criminal Court ordered a remand of 15 days, citing he posed a threat to the society.
Cases of theft and robbery have been rising across Greater Male’ area, which remains the highest number of reported criminal activities in the area according to police statistics. According to statistics, authorities received 3,762 cases of theft and robbery last year and 1,212 such cases so far this year.
