MDA Hints at Possible Exit from Government Coalition

The Maldives Development Alliance (MDA) has indicated that it may have to leave the governing Congress Coalition, citing concerns over unfulfilled agreements with the government.
After supporting former President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih as a coalition partner in the previous MDP government, MDA aligned with PNC to support President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu between the first and second rounds of the 2023 presidential election.
In a post on X today, MDA Vice President and Velidhoo MP Mohamed Abbas stated that he respectfully reminds the President to honor and act according to the agreements signed multiple times between President Dr. Muizzu and MDA President Ahmed Siyam during the presidential election.
He further warned that if the President does not uphold the agreement, MDA may be forced to leave the coalition, despite the significant support provided by Siyam and the party. However, Abbas did not disclose specific details of the agreement or which terms are currently in dispute.
While part of the coalition, MDA has previously criticized some government policies. Notably, MDA leader Siyam voiced strong opposition to tax increases, arguing in parliament that the existing tourism taxes are already high and further increases could harm the economy.
