Scams worth nearly MVR 300,000 reported during Eid holiday

35 cases of scams were reported to the authorities during the Eid al-Adha holidays, resulting in financial losses of close to MVR 300,000, according to information shared by the Anti-Scam Center.
The Maldives has been experiencing an increase in cybercrimes, including various scams. This prompted the police to establish a designated Anti-Scam Center in March 17, aimed at strengthening efforts to combat such crimes.
According to the Anti-Scam Center, scams are most often run via Viber and Facebook Marketplace.
The Center urged greater public vigilance, and urged people against sharing their OTP and passwords.
Back on May 27, the police said that scams during the previous two months resulted in the loss of MVR 2.5 million. The police were able to recover only MVR 700,000.
