Former lawmaker Imthiyaz Fahmy (Inthi) has filed candidacy for the vacant role of the president of The Democrats.
In a post on X on Tuesday afternoon, Inthi announced that he has filed his candidacy for the vacant role of the Democrats’ president, and has also resigned from his post as the party’s spokesperson.
Inthi, who previously served as the parliamentary representative for North Maafannu constituency, asked for support from members of the Democrats.
The top post at Democrats was vacated after the party’s former president Hassan Latheef left the party to rejoin the main opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP). Other top officials who left the party to rejoin MDP include vice president Mohamed Shifaz (Shippe) and Hassan Amr, the former managing director of State Trading Organization (STO).
However, Inthi chose to remain with the Democrats.
Former Madaveli MP Hassan Firushan, another vice president, has assumed the responsibilities of the party’s president until a new one can be elected.
The Democrats is set to hold elections to fill the vacancies on February 15.
