Rasmale’ dredging project surpasses 500 hectares milestone

The government’s landmark Rasmale’ dredging project has successfully reclaimed nearly 500 hectares of land, marking a significant milestone in the nation’s largest-ever housing initiative.
President Dr Mohamed Muizzu, speaking at the weekly press conference, confirmed that dredging operations are progressing rapidly across 11 designated sites and are fully aligned with the government’s vision under the flagship “Housing for All” initiative.
Utilising three state-of-the-art dredgers—including two of the world’s largest vessels—work is being conducted 24 hours a day to complete the full 1,009 hectares of land reclamation by April.
“We are committed to keeping our promises. Unlike the past, we will complete the dredging before opening applications for housing plots,” he emphasised.
The Rasmale’ project, officially launched on 18 December 2023, was fast-tracked with the award of the contract to Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL) last December. As part of the initial phase, 15,000 land plots will be allocated to residents of Male’ under the new “Family Housing” programme. The government aims to provide 65,000 homes through Rasmale’, heralding a long-term solution to the country’s critical housing shortage.
Additionally, President Muizzu revealed that technical surveys are currently underway to establish permanent connectivity between Rasmale’ and Male’.
