International community stands against prosecution of Nasheed – Qasim

The prosecution of former President and opposition leader Mohamed Nasheed is opposed by the international community، says Jumhooree Party leader and Nasheed’s partner in opposition، Qasim Ibrahim.
The state pressed charges against Nasheed for the unconstitutional imprisoning of the chief justice of Criminal Court Abdulla Mohamed for 21 days during Nasheed’s presidential term.
However، PG office today has withdrawn the charges against Nasheed for further evaluation and investigation. PG Office did not inform whether the case will be re-prosecuted.
Speaking to the press after the hearing of Nazim’s appeal case in High Court today، Qasim thanked PG Muhtaz for withdrawing the charges pressed against Nasheed. “We are all working for a better future of the nation. I thank PG for his decision to withdraw the charges as he is on the same cause.”
Qasim further urged PG not to go astray due to fear and continue to make decisions along with the authority granted to him by the law.
Noting that the international community and several local citizens oppose the prosecution of Nasheed، Qasim said now is too late for the prosecution of Nasheed.
“Continuing with the prosecution has no meaning now، as it is too late. It is not first degree murder. I urge the Government and PG to evaluate this with the weight of the case. Whats important is whether or not Nasheed can run for presidency. Whats important is the stability of our nation.”
Meanwhile، PG also withdrew the charges pressed against the associates of President Nasheed in the case، current Defense Minister Major General (Retired) Moosa Ali Jaleel، who was the thenChief of Defense Force، Central Hithadhoo MP Ibrahim Mohamed Didi، who was the then MNDF Male Area Commander، and Tholath Ibrahim Kaleyfaanu، who was the then Defense Minister.
