Minister Saeed: Digital Transformation Requires Broad Support, Not Division

The government's 'Maldives 2.0' initiative is expected to deliver significant benefits for businesses and investment, according to Economic Development and Trade Minister Mohamed Saeed. He made this statement in a social media post about the initiative, which is a comprehensive digital transformation effort aimed at modernising governance, reducing bureaucratic inefficiencies, and bolstering economic growth.
The initiative was officially unveiled by President Dr Mohamed Muizzu at the 'Maldives 2.0' summit held at Barceló Nasandhura Hotel in Malé. The government frames the initiative as a crucial step in the country's long-term development strategy. Minister Saeed, in a public statement, described the programme as a major national undertaking, calling for broad support and cautioning against political discord that could impede its progress.
The minister stressed the need to remove bureaucratic obstacles and enhance government efficiency, pointing to Estonia—a recognised global leader in digital governance—as a model for the Maldives' modernisation efforts. He noted that President Muizzu's decision to seek expertise from Estonia aligns with his broader vision of elevating the Maldives to developed nation status by 2040.
Government officials believe that the initiative will do more than streamline state operations. They anticipate its impact will extend to the private sector, stimulating investment and strengthening economic stability. Minister Saeed reiterated that collective cooperation, rather than political division, is key to ensuring its success.
Described by government sources as a wide-reaching digital overhaul, 'Maldives 2.0' involves a multi-institutional effort to reform state operations through technology. Over the next three years, officials plan to integrate digital tools that will accelerate public service delivery, improve transparency, and curb corruption.
