Today's parliament sitting cancelled in relation to MP Hameed's case

The Secretary General of the parliament said that all MPs had been informed via a text message that today's sitting had been cancelled, and that it had been cancelled because the leaders of the parliamentary groups and the speaker of the parliament needed more time to discuss MP Ismail Abdul Hameed's case following yesterday's events. He also noted that Ismail Abdul Hameed attended the parliament sitting on his own accord. "There is a rule in the parliament regulation that says if an MP is under an investigation that the relevant authority that is conducting the investigation escort the MP to parliament, but it is not the case with the Kaashidhoo MP, and there is no guideline for such a situation. The Department of Penitentiary and Rehabilitation Services (DPRS) brought him to the parliament on his request," he said. Speaker of Parliament Abdulla Shahid met with Chief Justice Ahmed Faaiz Hussain regarding Kaashidhoo MP Ismail Abdul Hameed, requesting the legal procedures be speeded up. The case filed by the state said when Hameed was the Director of Male Municipality he had used the power of his position to commit an act of corruption in the deal made to buy a barge for the Waste Management Unit. The sate claimed that he had confirmed the barge had been received while it was not and made the remaining 50 percent of the payment to the company. Article 73(c3) of the constitution states that a member of the parliament immediately becomes disqualified if he has been convicted of a criminal offence and is serving a sentence of more than 12 months.
