The UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon issued a statement today, urging all stakeholders to accept the report of the Commission of National Inquiry (CNI).
The Statement says that the CNI was reconstituted in June with international assistance and since has been recognised by all parties as a credible inquiry mechanism.
“The Secretary-General urges all parties to accept the findings of the Commission and now begin the process of national dialogue aimed at resolving the political problems facing the country.”
The Secretary-General also welcomed the start today of high-level political dialogue, and expressed hope that this leads to national reconciliation and a way of moving forward.
He called on all parties to exercise maximum cooperation and restraint.
In the Statement, the Secretary-General reaffirmed the readiness of the UN to extend the necessary support and assistance requested by the parties.
The Commonwealth and the Unites States have also called on political parties of the Maldives to accept and respect the findings of the CNI.
