Maldives and China exchange 11 agreements to boost cooperation across key sectors

The Maldives and China on Tuesday exchanged 11 agreements designed to boost cooperation across key sectors, including economic development and renewable energy.
The signing of the agreements took place at the Wangfujing Hilton Hotel in Beijing, and was witnessed by President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu, who is currently on an official visit to China at the invitation of Chinese President Xi Jinping to attend the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) Summit.

According to the President’s Office, the Maldives and China signed a total of 11 agreements, including Memoranda of Understanding, aimed at further strengthening bilateral collaboration across key sectors, including capacity building, economic development, infrastructure, and renewable energy.
President’s Office said the initiatives underscore “the shared commitment of both nations to deepen their longstanding partnership and explore new avenues of cooperation to promote sustainable development and mutual prosperity.”

During his visit to China, President Muizzu and President Xi led bilateral meetings between Maldives and China, that focused on key areas of cooperation, including economic development, trade and investment, security collaboration, and fostering people-to-people connections.
At the meeting, President Xi Jinping reaffirmed China’s commitment to providing full support to the Maldives in achieving its national development goals, and emphasized the importance of continuing the result-oriented partnership. Both leaders agreed to further elevate China-Maldives relations under the Comprehensive Strategic Cooperative Partnership.

President Muizzu also delivered a statement at the SCO Plus meeting, in which he positioned the Maldives as a resilient and forward-looking nation, highlighting its longstanding friendship with China, its ambitious climate commitments, and the transformative “Maldives 2.0” digitalization agenda. He also reiterated the Maldives’ support for the Global Governance Initiative and called for greater inclusion of Small Island Developing States in international decision-making processes.
He also held meetings with a several foreign leaders on the sidelines of the SCO, including Nepalese Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli, and Azerbaijani President Ilham Heydar oglu Aliyev.
President Muizzu is also scheduled to attend commemorations marking the 80th anniversary of Japan’s defeat and the end of World War II.
