Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL) on Thursday commenced work to reclaim 42 hectors of land in Vihafaru lagoon located in N. Atoll, in order to develop an airport.
Land reclamation works were initiated by Economic Minister Mohamed Saeed and MACL’s Managing Director Ibrahim Shareef in a ceremony attended by President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu, cabinet ministers, and senior government officials.
Total 42 hectors of land will be reclaimed under the project.

President Muizzu had announced plans to develop an airport in Vihafaru in early last year.
During a visit to N. Holhudhoo in July, President Muizzu said the project will commence early this year and wrap up within one-and-a-half years in order to support the atoll’s vibrant tourism sector.

N. Atoll, home to multiple luxury resorts, has a single airport, located in N. Maafaru.
In addition to building a new airport in N. Atoll, President Muizzu also promised to expand the Maafaru International Airport.
