Kulhudhuffushi South MP Mohamed Nasheed expressed his concerns over the proposed defamation bill, proposed by Ungoofaaru Constituency MP Jaufar Dauood, stating that there were many concerning issues with the bill.
In today’s Parliament session, Nasheed said that having to settle that penalty prior to appealing was not acceptable. He also said the clause which states that a statement must be sought from the person allegations are made against was not conducive to media operations.
Nasheed said that this was deeply concerning as he was one of those who had advocated for media freedom in the country.
A lawyer by profession, Nasheed had worked to bring media reforms during his tenure as Information Minister.
