Claims of his involvement in the embezzlement through a state-run corporation were only made to spread awareness and are false, says Hoarafushi MP Mohamed Ismail.
The Anti-Corruption Commission had investigated the allegations and questioned MP Ismail, who told them that he was not involved and only said so to inform the public and in the ‘spur of the moment’.
The commission had also drawn MP Ismail’s bank details and stated in their report on Monday that there was no evidence linking him to the embezzlement.
MP Ismail said in an interview to a local television station that 60 percent of the funds stolen through the Maldives Marketing and Public Relations Corporation was given to members of a particular political party and that he himself had been involved in distributing funds, having carried them ‘in a sack’.
