MDP vow to do all they can to free Nasheed
The decree was proposed by MDP Parliamentary Group Leader Ibrahim Mohamed Solh (Iboo) during the MDP National Council meeting held Saturday night. The decree was approved unanimously by all 60 members present during the meeting. A special seat was left vacant in Nasheed’s honour during the meeting as members spoke of how they did not accept the court ruling, finding it unjust. They alleged that it was planned by the government to destroy Nasheed’s political career and called to impose a boycott on government aligned businesses. Announcing the end of the meeting, MDP Chairperson Ali Waheed said that the party would go to the streets starting Saturday night to enforce the decree, and asked that all Council members join MDP members in the street protest after the meeting. Many crowded around the projectors placed outside Salt Café – whether the meeting was held – to watch how the meeting proceeded. Council members later joined the crowd for the street protest after the meeting. The rally took off along Majeedhee Magu and stopped in front of MDP Office located in Sosun Magu. There, former Kendhikulhudhoo MP Ahmed Easa told the protestors that the rally had ended for the night, and that another gathering would be held at Usfasgandu, Sunday night. However, protesters had headed towards People’s Majlis and demonstrated outside the building.
