President Abdullah Yameen Abdul Qayyoom has said that even thoughdirect economic benefits cannot be distinguished clearly, maintaininga presence in international bodies, gave the credibility and investor confidence.
He made the statement speaking in the “Economic Dialogue with the President” forum held in Dharubaaruge, Wednesday night. President Yameen said that participation in international bodies, gave investors confidence and the resultant effected benefited the nation and the public.
“If a nation is not a part of such organizations, then the nation can conduct their affairs in any manner they please. If a nation is part of an international body, any time the nation toes the line, other member nations will act against that,” President Yameen said. President Yameen added that this was the case when Maldives was in the same bodies as that of the first world nations.
In his address, President Yameen thanked CMAG for their decision to engage in discussions to resolve the issues at the body, regarding Maldives. He stressed that diplomacy, not show of strength, was the key to resolving issues that faced the nation. President Yameen highlighted the Palestine Israel conflict, citing the attacks Israel gave to the Palestinians only strengthened the Palestinian resolve.
In this address, President Yameen stressed that only Maldivians will dictate their internal affairs. He added that if an international body is aiming to dictate the internal matters, then the Government will always consider the possibility of leaving the said body.
