The Link Road project in Laamu Atoll, to be implemented under free aid from the government of China, has been inaugurated by President Abdulla Yameen.
The inauguration ceremony was held in Laamu Fonadhoo yesterday, Monday, 15 December 2014.
Speaking at the ceremony, Minister of Housing and Infrastructure Dr Mohamed Muizzu said that the cost of the project is $30 million, and that the Chinese contractor has assured that it would be completed within 18 months.
Dr Muizzu said that the project would act as the foundation for development in Laamu Atoll.
The ceremony was attended by President Yameen and First Lady Fathimath Ibrahim, ministers, Chinese Ambassador to the Maldives Wang Fukang, Leader of Maldives Development Alliance (MDA) Ahmed Siyam Mohamed, and senior officials of the government.
The 15.1 km road would connect the islands of Fonadhoo and Gan in Laamu Atoll. The project will be carried out by China’s Jiangsu Provincial Transport Engineering Group. The agreement regarding this project was signed between the two governments during the visit by Chinese President Xi Jinping to the Maldives, in September 2014.
