Maldives calls for accountability over Israeli actions

The Maldives has called on the international community to hold Israel accountable for its actions in the Palestinian territories, urging full compliance with international law and an end to a culture of impunity.
Delivering the national statement during the “Interactive Dialogue with Independent International Commission of Inquiry on the Occupied Palestinian Territory, including East Jerusalem and in Israel” at the 62nd session of the Human Rights Council, Permanent Representative of the Maldives to the United Nations Office at Geneva, Salma Rasheed said the Maldives urges Israel to fully comply with its obligations under international law by ensuring the protection of civilians and civilian infrastructure essential for their survival. The Maldives also called for safe, sustained and unhindered humanitarian access to those affected by the conflict.
The government called for decisive measures to prevent further displacement of Palestinians and to ensure effective remedies and rehabilitation for civilians affected by the conflict.
The statement also stressed the need to create conditions conducive to a just, lasting and peaceful resolution of the conflict, including respect for the rights of the Palestinian people and their right to self-determination.
Reiterating its longstanding position on the issue, the Maldives expressed strong support for ending what it described as Israel’s illegal occupation of Palestine and reaffirmed its commitment to the establishment of an independent and sovereign Palestinian state based on the pre-1967 borders, with East Jerusalem as its capital.
