Maldives among few countries in Southeast Asia offering PayPal services

Ooredoo Maldives has said it is proud that the Maldives is among the few countries in the Southeast Asia offering PayPal services.
PayPal services were launched in the Maldives on 15 June through Ooredoo’s m-Faisaa platform. Users can register for the service directly via m-Faisaa.
Speaking at an information session held on the newly launched service, Ooredoo Maldives’ Chief Commercial Officer Hussain Niyaz said users do not need to download or install the PayPal app to create an account or use the service.
Niyaz emphasised that the service will particularly benefit small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) and home-based businesses. Businesses can receive payments from international customers in US dollars by sharing their PayPal ID, he noted.
The service is expected to make it easier for Maldivian entrepreneurs to participate in cross-border e-commerce and the global digital economy.
The inward remittance permit required to provide the service was issued to Techfin Maldives, Ooredoo’s fintech subsidiary, in October 2025. The PayPal system underwent a testing phase earlier this year before its official launch. The government believes PayPal will help expand the participation of Maldivians in the global digital economy.
