Ahmed Siyam Mohamed, the president of Maldives Development Alliance (MDA) and Meedhoo MP, citing the importance of social responsibility in protecting the environment rather than just depending on national-scale action, has called on the public to immediately cease acts that threaten the environment.
In an address to the nation on the occasion of World Environment Day, Siyam noted that there were lessons to be learned from the surrounding environment. He emphasized that everyone must recognize there is no room for negligence, as the environment forms the foundation of both well-being and a prosperous life.
Nevertheless, he pointed out that the harmful effects of environmental neglect are becoming increasingly apparent—something he said is obvious to anyone who reflects on it.
“My earnest appeal is to collaboratively work on fulfilling one’s social responsibility towards protecting the environment rather than just depending on national-scale action,” he added.
Siyam emphasized that the detrimental effects on the environment caused by careless human actions are being confirmed through the knowledge we continue to acquire.
In this regard, he detailed that actions such as dumping waste into the sea, burning garbage, removing sand and stones from beaches, and cutting down trees have led to the Maldives losing vital parts of its natural environment. He therefore urged the public to immediately stop engaging in activities that harm the environment.
World Environment Day is commemorated annually on June 5th to encourage awareness and action for the protection of the environment.
