President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has announced that the government aims to enable one-third of the employees currently working in the Civil Service to work remotely within a legal framework by 2028. He made the remark while speaking at the launch of the government’s digitalisation project "Maldives 2.0".
Speaking at the ceremony, the President said that there are currently approximately 49,000 employees working across various government agencies. The government aims to establish a system where, by 2028, a large number of government employees can work from home, within specific regulations and legal framework, he said.
President Muizzu noted that such a change achieves many positive outcomes, including reducing the government’s expenditure significantly. This change will not have any adverse impact on the administration of the state, he assured, adding that the project will further strengthen and enhance the administration while also increasing transparency and ensuring the rights of the people.
"When we consider busy cities such as Male’, the traffic congestion will be reduced significantly, as well as pollution and emission of green house gases. Several similar results can be achieved by educing the number of employees who have to be physically present at offices,” the President said.
The President said if digitalisation can be achieved as per the government’s vision, other similar achievements can also be achieved.
