The Maldives Parliament has approved Dr Aishath Rameela’s appointment as a member of the Human Rights Commission of the Maldives (HRCM). The nomination was confirmed with a unanimous vote of 63 MPs.
President Dr Mohamed Muizzu nominated Dr Rameela on 2 October 2025, for the position made vacant by the expiry of the term of Mariyam Muna.
Dr Rameela formerly served as Minister of Agriculture and Animal Welfare and resigned from that role in December 2024 citing health reasons.
The HRCM is a five-member body with leadership and membership decided through a combination of presidential nomination and parliamentary approval.
With this appointment, the commission now fills the position and will proceed to elect its president at its next meeting.
