Gov’t plans nationwide island fitness activities by year-end

Minister of Sports, Fitness and Recreation, Abdulla Rafiu has revealed that the government is planning to conduct a regular, sustainable fitness activity in every island across the Maldives before the end of the year.
The government launched the “Hashiheyo Raajje” programme on 5 November 2024 with the aim of building a healthier society. The programme was launched by the Vice President Hussain Mohamed Latheef in Kulhudhuffushi City. The programme is divided into six zones, with ongoing training of required professionals.
Delivering this year’s Presidential Address, President Dr Mohamed Muizzu emphasised the importance of sports in preventing lifestyle diseases, and reiterated that it is the government’s policy to expand the role of sports.
Speaking on PSM News’ Raajje Miadhu programme, Minister Rafiu said activities under the Hashiheyo Raajje programme are already being carried out successfully, although not yet uniformly across all islands. The government intends to expand the programme nationwide by the end of the year, with a 45–60 minute fitness activity conducted at least three days a week.
The Minister said he believes participation will not be burdensome for the public, and that regular involvement will make participants feel better and more motivated. The initiative aims to improve strength, fitness, and overall health, benefiting not only sports participation but also general public life and work, he said.
