Privileges Committee rejects case against Nasheed

The Parliament’s Committee on Privileges has rejected a case against former President Mohamed Nasheed, which accused him of interfering with the rights of Members of Parliament.
The case was filed by Galolhu-dhekunu MP Ahmed Mahloof in 2010.
Mahloof accused Nasheed of interfering with MPs’ rights when Nasheed said at the press conference held following the resignation of his cabinet en masse, that the Parliament acted as an obstruction to the government.
At today’s Committee meeting, Chairman Hussain Mohamed highlighted that neither Nasheed nor members of his cabinet are part of the government today. He suggested requesting for advice from the Counsel General before moving forward with the case.
As suggested by the Chairman, Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) member Abdul Muhsin proposed to request for the Counsel General’s advice, and his proposition was supported by Dhivehi Rayyithunge Party (DRP) member Mohamed Zubair.
However, Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) member Imthiyaz Fahmy proposed to remove the issue from the Committee’s agenda, which was supported by Mahchangolhi-dhekunu MP Mohamed Rasheed.
Imthiyaz raised several questions regarding the case filed by Mahloof against Nasheed.
“Mahloof accused Nasheed of interfering with MPs’ rights at the press conference held after the resignation of his cabinet. But how is that related to Nasheed?” he said.
Two out of four members present at the meeting voted to reject the case. The other two members voted to request the Counsel General for advice. As the votes were equal, the Chairman sided with the members who voted to reject the case.
