A fire broke out on an upper floor of a Hiyaa tower on Friday evening.
Sun has learned that the fire broke out on the 24th floor of Hiyaa Tower 5.
A Sun journalist at the scene confirmed that residents evacuated the building following the fire.
Maldives National Defense Force (MNDF) confirmed the incident, adding its Fire and Rescue Services attended to the scene.
Photos and videos of the fire circulating on social media show black smoke gushing out from the floor in question. Sun has learned that the smoke also spread to other levels of the building.
Hiyaa Towers, which house a large population, have seen previous fire incidents that caused damage.
