Minister of Higher Education, Labour and Skills Development Dr Ali Haidar is to be summoned to parliament over the issue of delays in depositing funds to those studying on student loans and scholarships.
The summons was proposed by ruling People's National Congress (PNC) MP for Central Hithadhoo Ahmed Azaan Marzooq. The notice sent by Azaan states that complaints are being received from parents about delays in depositing stipends and tuition fees for those studying on student loans and scholarships.
Azaan called for the Minister to explain the reasons behind these delays.
In a second notice, Azaan asked for clarificationon why there are delays in responding to emails and letters sent by students.
Mihaaru News reports that a parent of a student studying under the student loan scheme said the ministry had responded to their query about delays saying the funds can only be deposited next month.
"The course fees are due today. But the ministry has said that the loan money can only be issued next month," the parent is cited as saying.
