Ex-Youth Minister Ahmed Mahloof, who was recently appointed Maldivian Ambassador to Japan after a controversial party switch, has urged against politicizing President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu’s public meetings.
The President is currently holding public meetings with residents of Male’ districts where members of the general public have the opportunity to ask the President questions and express their views.
The meetings have also been attended by Male’ residents who have held senior posts in the government prior to this that have posed questions to the President and expressed their views.
Notably, former prosecutor general Ahmed Muizzu expressed concern regarding the government’s actions towards the judiciary sector during the meeting held with Mahchangolhi residents.
Mahloof, who very recently joined ruling PNC, via a post on social media, defended these public meetings, citing that they have been instrumental in bringing forth the concerns of the public.
“The difficult lives these citizens are living and their lifelong efforts to secure housing are being directly relayed to the President with such strong emotions,” he said.
As such, Mahloof urged against politicizing and disturbing the order of these meetings, citing it would only cause losses to the public who have been wanting the chance to interact with the President directly.
He expressed his belief that political activity should take place on party platforms, at rallies, in party offices, and through social media or TV programs—rather than coming between a platform for the public to interact with the president.
The meetings have been heavily criticized by the opposition, who have said it is creating a culture where the public has to beg for the President to resolve issues.
