Mosque damaged in retaliation for vandalising monuments: Islamic Minister

Dr Bari told Haveeru that reports have been received that a mosque in Addu was damaged on the night of the day the Sri Lankan monument in Maradhoo was destroyed. Despite rumours claiming that the sound system of the mosque was damaged no such report had been made to the police. Sound systems installed in mosques are often stolen in the country and no authority has confirmed that the damages made to the mosque in Feydhoo are in retaliation for vandalising SAARC monuments. In an article published on his website, Islamic Minister Dr Bari said the irreligious monuments should be removed because the religion of Islam and the constitution do not allow the display of such monuments. Dr Majeed further said other measures could be taken to solve the issue instead of the people taking the law into their own hands and destroying the monuments. "In our religion we are ordered to refrain from such behaviour [destroying artefacts and places sacred to non-believers] for a reason. Allah Almighty, orders all Muslims in the Qur'an to respect the idols and places of worship of non-believers and not insult them as they might insult Allah in return," he wrote. The Islamic Minister stressed that the people should think of the consequences of damaging the monuments, as they were gifts from neighbouring countries. The problem can only be solved by talking with the countries involved, he added. "A letter has been the sent to the Foreign Ministry, the President's Office, Police and Addu City Council requesting the removal of the controversial monuments,” the minister’s article read. The head of the Sri Lankan monument, which represents the country's national symbol of lion, was cut off Thursday night. Police patrols resumed Wednesday after the Pakistan monument in Hithadhoo island was set on fire as it allegedly depicted "worship idols" banned in Maldives. Part of the structure "disappeared" Monday night. The Sri Lankan monument was also doused in crude oil Tuesday night. Meanwhile, Islamic Ministry Thursday ordered the relevant government authorities to remove the irreligious SAARC monuments, which it said, breach the nation's law and religion.
