Former Defence Minister Tholhath accused over power transfer
The Commission of National Inquiry (CNI) set up to probe the circumstances surrounding the transfer of power on February 7 publicized report has revealed that the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) had accused their former Defence Minister Tholhath Ibrahim Kaleyfaanu to having played a part in the transfer of power on February 7. The report stated that the accusations included many names, but with no evidential basis for the allegations. Chief among those named were the current President Mohamed Waheed Hassan Manik, former President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom, present Minister of Defence Retired Colonel Mohamed Nazim, present Chief of Armed Forces General Ahmed Shiyam, leader of Jumhooree Party Gasim Ibrahim, former Minister of Defence Tholhath Ibrahim, present State Minister of Home Affairs Mohamed Fayaz, present Commissioner of Police Abdulla Riyaz and Interim Deputy Leader of Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) Umar Naseer, and leader of the Adhaalath Party Sheikh Imran Abdulla. The report also stated that President Nasheed provided the Commission with a list of some 67 names, whose bank accounts and telephone logs he requested be scrutinized but that the allegations were unsupported by any evidence. It also detailed that all of the accused in the list had been summoned. General Shiyam, Nazim, Fayaz, Tholhath and Riyaz consented to the Commission’s request to scrutinize their respective bank accounts. The Commission stated that it had found nothing untoward or incriminating. The report also stated that former President Nasheed initially said that it was Nazim who delivered the threat to kill him and his family and sack the whole of Male. The Commission pointed out to him that Nazim never met him before he announced his decision to resign. President Nasheed clarified that the threat had been issued when Nazim met Tholhath and the military generals and that it was conveyed to him by the then Home Minister Hassan Afeef. Afeef claimed to have heard it from Tholhath. Tholhath denied communicating any threat to Afeef. All those present in the initial meeting between Nazim and Tholath testified that no threats had been made by Nazim. The commission concluded that Nasheed had indicated that Tholhath had informed him of a threat made by Nazim, relying on his Home Mnister Afeef’s word. “(Former) President Nasheed clarified that the threat had been issued when Nazim met Tholath and the Generals and that it was conveyed to him by Home Minister Hassan Afeef. Afeef claimed to have heard it from Tholath. Tholath denied communicating any threat to Afeef. All those present in the initial meeting between Nazim and Tholhath testified that no threat was conveyed,” the report stated. The Commission pointed out that Nazim never met Nasheed before he had announced his decision to resign on that day.
