Nasheed taking refuge at India HC to Parliament Committee

Feydhoo constituency MP Alhan Fahmy who submitted the case during the committee meeting on Thursday, insisted that Nasheed remaining under the protection of the Indian High Commission is a matter related to national security and hence must be probed by the committee. Alhan noted that if the government decides to sever ties with India while Nasheed is inside the mission and the police storms the complex it could further deteriorate the situation. He also proposed to meet officials of the Indian High Commission over the matter. Committee chair and Hulhu-henveiru constituency MP Moosa ‘Reeko’ Manik assured that the matter would be officially taken up with the Parliament Speaker Abdulla Shahid. He added that Nasheed’s case would be tabled on the agenda for a committee sit-down. Nasheed had taken refuge at the Indian High Commission in Male just past noon on Wednesday after the Hulhumale Magistrate Court had ordered the police to produce the ex-President in court to face charges over the unconstitutional arrest and detention of Chief Criminal Judge Abdulla Mohamed. The ex-President who remains inside the High Commission said on his twitter page that “India has agreed to give him refuge.” The Hulhumale Court cancelled Wednesday’s hearing on Nasheed’s trial after he sought refuge at the High Commission and did not attend the hearing. Police had earlier informed the Hulhumale Court that it is unable to implement the order issued to produce Nasheed in court as the ex-President was inside the High Commission. The order was issued after Nasheed missed the last hearing on Sunday as Nasheed had not returned to Maldives from his visit to India. Meanwhile, MDP has said Nasheed will remain at the High Commission until a free and fair election can be guaranteed.
