The Maldives’ electoral watchdog declared Monday that it did not receive any complaints major enough to warrant changes to the results of the Local Council Elections 2017.
The Elections Commission stated that total 70 complaints were filed at the commission regarding the local elections. EC member Ahmed Akram assured that the commission is working to respond to the complaints as quickly as possible but none of the complaints are serious enough to alter voting results.
According to Akram, most of the complaints pertained to difficulties faced during the voting, such as long queues and congestion, and the behaviours of observers and monitors.
The commission stated that all the minor glitches encountered at the start of voting had been ultimately solved and that the elections proceeded smoothly.
Meanwhile, the Elections Commission is to announce the temporary results of the Local Council Elections on Monday afternoon. While the results that have been published so far show that main opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) has won the majority of council seats, ruling Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) has refuted it and declared that PPM will ultimately win the elections.
