Econ Minister explains delay in minimum wage decision

The Minister of Economic Development Mr Fayyaz Ismail explains delay of finalizing minimum wage limit for local working class.
According to the minister earlier, the minimum wage limit was expected to be finalized by the end of February 2020. However, minister Fayyaz notes the delay for this came due to no conclusive input by Maldives Parliament.
Earlier on 18 February, Maldives government presented the issue on minimum wage to the parliament along with findings by International Labor Organization on the matter as well as the findings from various stakeholder meetings.
The ministry presented a bill on minimum wage to the parliament setting out several provisions, including fixing minimum wage on employees of seven economic sectors in the country.
Additionally the bill also grants the Minister of Economic Development with the authority to fix or set out the final minimum wage boundary.
However, the ministry’s proposed draft does not specify exact amounts or the minimum limitations to the minimum wage boundary.
The bill further specifies a designated board on minimum wage formed under the jurisdiction of the ministry itself, must review and revise the minimum wage limit in every two years and advice it accordingly the Minister as well.
Furthermore, the bill discussed minimum wage was subject to change based on abrupt or unprecedented changes to the Maldivian economy in general.
