Foreign Minister Dr Mohamed Asim is visiting India as a special envoy of President Abdulla Yameen, amid suggestions that India-Maldives diplomatic ties have come under strain due to growing Chinese influence.
According to the foreign ministry, Asim will pay a courtesy call on Prime Minister Narendra Modi and meet with the External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj on Thursday to “hold discussions on strengthening the close, friendly relations” between the two countries.
He is accompanied by Foreign Secretary Ahmed Sareer and Joint Secretary of the Foreign Ministry Aishath Azeema. The three-day visit will conclude on Thursday.
Yameen’s decision to send a special envoy to India was criticised by the spokesperson of the Maldives United Opposition as a move to “avoid direct interaction with his Indian counterpart, either forced by China not to, or he is too proud and big”.
Asim’s visit comes as relations with India have apparently soured over the Maldives signing a Free Trade Agreement with China in December after the deal was rushed through parliament.
Your FM is in India to ‘strengthen the close friendly relations between the two countries’. Is that so? I laughed so much reading this I wet myself. Nothing could be further from the truth.
The sooner the Indian government imposes punitive visa restrictions on you mallus the better.

India is a vast, secular, democratic and free country with one of the fastest growing economies in the world today. You are a teenie weenie motley collection of uninhabitable atolls in the middle of nowhere. Then you have a family run dictatorship, politically instability, drug addiction and radical Islam to deal with. Shame!
As for poverty, you have probably never visited your remote atolls where there is rampant unemployment, poverty and no drinking water. The less said of your overcrowded, crime infested capital city ‘Male Shitty’ the better.
Almost all your daily requirements come from my country. Unlike you I will never need to travel abroad for higher studies or medical treatment and everything I need is manufactured in India. Even my luxury SUV and smartphone is Made in India.
We need to cut down on the aid we give you ungrateful people. Why are the taxes of Hindus being given in aid to rabid Sunni Muslims who hate us? Why are we giving you hospitals (IGMH), naval patrol boats and helicopters?
