Jared Genser: Highest priority is to free Nasheed from prison

Jared Genser from the former President Mohamed Nasheed’s international team of lawyers has said that their highest priority is to free the former President who is currently serving a 13-year prison sentence from prison.
Speaking at a press conference at Kurumba Maldives, Genser said that President Nasheed has been neglected from numerous international rights and rights granted by the Maldivian Constitution.
Amaal Clooney, who is also part of the former President’s defense team, said that his trial proceeded after neglecting a lot of his rights. She noted that President Nasheed was not given adequate time to respond.
Due to these reason, Clooney said, that a lot of international community believes President Nasheed’s trial was “a travesty of justice.”
The former President’s lawyers said that they are almost certain that the case at U.N. working group of arbitrary detention would rule in President Nasheed’s favor.
President Nasheed’s lawyer, Jared Genser said that a lot was discussed at the meeting with President Nasheed at Maafushi Prison today and not long after the meeting, someone called the former President’s wife and informed what was discussed at the meeting.
Genser said that the meetings between President Nasheed and his lawyers are confidential and should not be listened into. And he said that the former President’s conversations with his lawyers have been listened into and shared with the Prosecutor General on previous occasions as well.
Lawyer Clooney met with Attorney General, Mohamed Anil yesterday.
“We had a constructive meeting. We discussed different ways consistent with the Maldivian domestic legal framework according to which President Nasheed could now be released,” she said.
Highlighting her meeting with the Attorney General, Clooney said that he recommended that she meet with the Prosecutor General as well “but unfortunately today I was informed the prosecutor general was not willing to meet with me.” Clooney said.
President Nasheed’s international team of lawyers is scheduled to leave the country sometime tonight after concluding their visit. The team said that they are to meet with foreign diplomats and media at Colombo.
