Minister of Homeland Security and Technology Ali Ihusaan stated on Tuesday that the most effective way to prevent corruption is to implement preventative measures while holding positions of power.
The minister's comments followed former President Mohamed Nasheed's announcement that the opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP)'s upcoming rally was not solely for the party, but a crucial event for all citizens to unitedly oppose corruption.
In a post on his X handle, Minister Ihusaan emphasized that preventing corruption involves taking decisive action against those in accountable positions and rigorously enforcing the law against offenders. He affirmed that the current government is actively engaged in this endeavor.
Ihusaan questioned the current opposition's intentions in mobilizing people for street protests, highlighting their previous 15-year opportunity to curb corruption.

The minister raised question as to why the current opposition had not combated against corruption during their time in office.
Recently, the state-owned Fenaka, during the last MDP government, faced revelations of widespread corruption and embezzlement.
Subsequently, former Fenaka Managing Director Ahmed Saeed Mohamed was convicted of corruption and sentenced to four years in prison.
On Monday, Nasheed declared his intention to organize a conference to address cases of theft and corruption within the country's state treasury.
Legal experts, civil society leaders, and journalists are expected to attend the conference.
