UN chief calls on all candidates to respect election results

Secretary General of the United Nations Ban Ki-moon has called on all candidates to respect the election results, no matter who win the September 7th presidential election.
A statement by the Secretary General’s office dated 3rd September 2013 stated that “the Secretary-General calls on the people of the Maldives to ensure that the upcoming presidential elections on 7 September will be conducted in a credible and peaceful manner.
In such a context, the Secretary-General encourages all presidential candidates to respect the election results no matter who wins and asks that all stakeholders overcome their past differences,” the statement read.
The Secretary General also urged all Maldivians to work together in a constructive manner toward national harmony and democratic consolidation and highlighted, in particular, the need for a renewed commitment to the institutional reform process.
Observer delegations from the United Nations, the Commonwealth and the European Union have arrived in the Maldives during the past week, including a high-level contingent from India, to observe the September 7th elections.
