Nasheed's request to postpone trial rejected

Supreme Court has rejected former President Mohamed Nasheed's case requesting that his trial be postponed until the end of the presidential election. Nasheed is being charged for the illegal detention of a Criminal Court judge during his presidency. An official from the Supreme Court stated that the court had decided to reject the case and that Nasheed was informed of the decision yesterday.
Nasheed had also raised a procedural issue during a hearing of his case in Hulhumale’ Magistrate Court, requesting that his trial be postponed until the end of the upcoming election. The Hulhumale’ Magistrate Court bench presiding over Nasheed’s case said that Nasheed has not yet been officially declared as a presidential candidate by the Elections Commission and thus, he cannot yet be considered a presidential candidate. The bench decided that Nasheed's point of procedure cannot be heeded.
The next hearing for Nasheed’s trial has been scheduled for the 4th of next month.
