Former Minister of Home Affairs, Umar Naseer has criticized the statement by former President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom that it was in the best interest of the country right now to work in alliance with former President Mohamed Nasheed.
In an interview to “Sun”, Umar commented that the Maumoon-Nasheed alliance served no benefit to the country, and that it would instead push the country into the same dark pit it had been in before.
He said the alliance would provide “oxygen” to the opposition - Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP), help hide the crimes committed during their rule, and pave the way for them to return to power.
“In the end, it will be the same as before. Imprisonment of politicians and judges, sale of the country’s assets, spread of anti-religious sentiments and promotion of secularism,” said Umar.
Umar said he foresaw Jumhoory Party’s Leader Qasim Ibrahim being arrested as before and the spas in his resorts being shut down and his assets being seized if MDP came back to power.
He said he also foresaw crowds gathering outside Maumoon’s residence to taunt him and to throw stones, and him being dragged to the police station if MDP returned to power.
