The Speaker of the People's Majlis, Mohamed Nasheed, praised India today.
He claimed that the source of India's prosperity was its parliamentary democracy and social pluralism.
In a tweet he posted on the occasion of Indian Republic Day, he wrote that India's "parliamentary democracy" and its "pluralistic society" was delivering prosperity to over a billion people.
However, though the Speaker characterised India as prosperous, statistics show that 68.8% of the Indian population live on USD$2 or less a day. Also, 30% of the population live on USD$1.5 a day or less.
In his tweet, the Speaker congratulated the Indian Prime Minister.
