President Nasheed, ministers invited to visit Iran
Iran's Islamic Republic News Agency (IRNA) said President Nasheed and the new Iranian Ambassador to the Maldives Mohammad Nabi Hassanpour discussed on strengthening the cooperation between the two countries. According to the news agency, the discussions were held at the ceremony held at the President's Office in Male on Sunday to present Hassanpour's credentials to President Nasheed. The agency stressed that the President expressed his satisfaction with the amicable relations between the two nations and announced his readiness to visit Iran in the near future. The Iranian ambassador further voiced his country's willingness to enhance ties with Maldives in the areas of fishing, tourism, oil, and health, the agency added. Haveeru was unable to get a comment from the President's Press Secretary about the report. The invitation comes following the appointment of former Maldivian Foreign Minister Dr Ahmed Shaheed as the United Nations Special Rapporteur on the Human Rights Situation in Iran. Tehran, however, decided to take measures to prohibit the Dr Shaheed's entry to the country. The UN Human Rights Council voted to create the rapporteur's position in March 2011, to monitor what sponsoring nations said were crackdowns on dissent and a surge in executions in Iran. Human Rights Watch counted 388 executions in Iran in 2010, while Amnesty International put the figure at 252, ranking the Islamic republic second only to China in the number of people put to death last year.
