Minister of Economic Development Ahmed Mohamed, former deputy leader of Dhivehi Rayyithunge Party (DRP) and member of the party’s council, has left the party.
In an interview to Sun, Ahmed Mohamed said that he left the party over discontentment regarding the recent conduct of the party.
“We are seeing the party being conducted against the two ideals that the it was founded upon, especially since the party does not support for the elections to be held again, as per the Supreme Court verdict. I was unhappy that things done this way,” Ahmed Mohamed said. “The party declared support for President Waheed after a decision made by the council. So a decision [to support] for the election to he held again, must also be made after discussion within the council.”
He said that he has notified party leader Ahmed Thasmeen Ali of his departure from the party.
“I will join a party that is in line my ideology quite soon. It is being considered,” Ahmed Mohamed said.
Ahmed Mohamed had supported the Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) for the second round of the presidential election, following the defeat of the President Waheed and DRP coalition in the first round on 7th September.
