Finance Minister Ahmed Munavvar have said that no country in the world gives full subsidies with the changes in price of staple food in world markets. Minister said that, the citizens should bear some costs associated with rising prices.
Minister said that no changes have been made to the prices in Maldives in a long time and it is not feasible economically. He said that most people are concerned because the government brought these changes after a long time of static prices. Minister Munavvar noted that prices fluctuate based on the world market, even in the countries which produce these products.
He further said that, economic problems cannot be solved by finding political solutions for economic problems.
He said that everyone should accept this fact. In the government oversight committee of the parliament, opposition members said that the only thing requested by the global financial institutions are not removing the subsidies but also reducing political appointees. They accused the government of increasing political posts even now.
