The Maldives Industrial Fisheries Company Limited (MIFCO) has assured the public that fish and fish products will remain readily available throughout the holy month of Ramadan, dismissing social media rumours of potential shortages.
In a statement to PSM News, MIFCO acknowledged a seasonal decline in fishing activity at the start of Ramadan but stressed that proactive measures have been implemented to meet increased consumer demand.
Ramadan traditionally records a surge in fish consumption. However, recent figures indicate a reduction in daily catch volumes, with December averaging 242 tonnes per day compared to 93 tonnes in the preceding month. So far in February, MIFCO has purchased an average of 58 tonnes daily, raising public concerns over supply stability.
In response, the company has strengthened coordination with local fishermen and industry stakeholders to stabilise the supply chain. MIFCO also reported enhancing inventory management and distribution operations to ensure consistent availability of products at its outlets nationwide.
Officials stated that Ramadan preparedness planning is conducted annually to mitigate fluctuations in fish supply. This year, procurement strategies have been adjusted based on market data and close engagement with industry partners to sustain adequate stock levels.
MIFCO reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring uninterrupted access to fish products for households across the Maldives during the holy month.
