China’s Ambassador to the Maldives, Kong Xianhua, has reaffirmed Beijing’s commitment to enhancing trade access for Maldivian fishery products in the Chinese market.
The remarks came during a meeting with the Maldives’ Minister of Fisheries and Ocean Resources, Ahmed Shiyam, where both sides discussed strengthening bilateral cooperation in the fisheries sector, one of the cornerstones of the Maldivian economy.
Ambassador Kong underscored the importance of implementing the Free Trade Agreement (FTA) between the two countries to bolster trade relations. He emphasised that particular attention would be given to increasing the visibility and accessibility of Maldivian fish products in China.
The discussion also covered opportunities for investment in modern fisheries technology and capacity-building initiatives aimed at supporting sustainable development.
Ambassador Kong assured continued support from the Chinese government toward the Maldives’ national development goals, particularly in sectors such as fisheries that are vital to the local economy.
Minister Shiyam expressed confidence that under Ambassador Kong’s leadership, the Maldives-China partnership would continue to flourish, citing a history of close diplomatic and economic ties between the two nations.
