Maldivian Democratic Party’s (MDP) President and Parliament Speaker Mohamed Nasheed has stated that his running mate will be from Addu City if he becomes the party’s presidential candidate in the upcoming election.
At a press conference on Sunday, Nasheed asserted that his running mate will be from Addu and that he will be a "young" candidate who represents the entire Maldives.
"I am also getting old now," the former president said, "so I think the youth should have a bigger role."
Nasheed did not reveal whether he had any nominees in mind.
"I hope we can go forward with a favourable candidate," he said.
When asked if he would concede to his rival, President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih, he maintained that the majority of the MDP supported him and claimed that he would win the primary by a margin of 70 percent.
MDP’s President has eluded the question whenever he is asked about conceding defeat, and at today’s press conference, Nasheed did not allude to a definite answer either.
Reporters asked whether he had a comment regarding Solih's statement that he would back the MDP member elected by party members, Nasheed gave his standard response: "I will not have to [concede], I don’t see a scenario where I don’t win MDP’s ticket, even after all the tampering, I will win."
